Just Chatting

What it is

Just Chatting is Twitch's biggest category, where streamers talk directly to their audience instead of playing a game. It grew out of the old "IRL" section and now covers everything from reacting to videos to answering viewer questions for hours.

What they actually see

A person on webcam in their room talking, often while scrolling social media, watching YouTube videos, or reading messages aloud from the live chat beside them. There is no gameplay to structure it, so streams meander for hours across whatever topics come up.

In this one

  • Chat with strangers
  • Long sessions
  • Strong language
  • Social pressure

Why kids love it

It feels like hanging out with an older friend who is always around and always talking to you, which is a powerful kind of company.

Worth knowing

Twitch requires users to be 13 and up, and because there is no game to keep things on topic, the conversation and the scrolling chat can go anywhere, including adult subjects.

One way in

So it's just a person talking for three hours. What makes the ones you watch worth listening to?
